Literacy

This year in literacy we will be dividing the day into two parts; Reading and Writing.

During the reading portion, we will follow the Daily Five Model. The components of Daily Five are;
  • read to self, read to someone, work on writing, listen to reading and word work.
Some of these components will be covered through whole and small group instruction as well as individual conferences.
There will also be a very large focus on comprehension, fluency and accuracy when reading.

The class will use Raz-kids daily in the classroom and extension activities for home will be available.

During writing, we will follow the writer's workshop model.
What is Writer’s Workshop?

This consists of:
  •  a Mini-Lesson (5-15 minutes1). A short lesson focused on a single topic
  • that students need help with. Modelling.
    Status of the Class (2-5 minutes). A quick way of finding out what each student is working on
    Writing Time (20-45 minutes or more!). They write both independently and in small groups. Teacher will conference with individual students or small groups.
    Sharing (5-15 minutes). Writers read what they have written and seek feedback from their audience.
